Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Indicators
Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere warms the planet, causing climate change. Human activities have raised the atmosphere’s CO2 content by 50% in less than 200 years.

CO2 contamination in numbers:
In 2022, CO2conc has increased to about 420 ppm
- CO2 growth rate = 2.3 ppm/year ~ 18 billion tons of CO2 = 4.9 billion tons of C / year; [3.67 GtCO2 = 1 GtC]
- 1 ppm of atm CO2 = 7.83 billion tons of CO2 = 2.13 billion tons of C ~ 1 km3
- To reduce 10 ppm of CO2 = 78.3 billion tons of CO2 = 21.3 billion tons of C (solid to be removed)
- In 2018, the Total World Coal consumption was 8.56 billion tons ~ 2.5 years of to reduce 10 ppm
- How much CO2 is captured by photosynthesis?
- It is estimated that approximately 258 billion tons of CO2 are converted by photosynthesis annually. Most of the fixation occurs in terrestrial environments, especially the tropics.
